social-networking-for-bloggersThink about this! According to a survey completed in September 2009, there are 1.73 billion internet users worldwide and 234 million websites. From these colossal numbers, we find that Facebook has passed the 400 million user mark (generating 6 million pageviews per minute), Twitter hits 50 million Tweets per day and over one billion videos are viewed on YouTube every day (source). How does this affect Bloggers?

By definition, a blog is an educational or informative web log, and there is a major crossover between Blogging and Social Networking which should be exploited to the full to maximize your presence whether you are blogging to spread information, generate revenue or both. People join a social network site to be noticed and to find out what is going on. In another amazing study, it was shown that 75% on Americans get their news online, receive it from a social networking site direct or via email and 52% forward that news on through networking sites (source).

So how is it best to promote your blog through a social network site? First avoid the big guns unless you are truly confident and prepared to work many hours to build up your contacts list. MySpace is already crawling with spam, so your presence needs to stand out from the crowd. Facebook’s success is due to the fact that it has appealed to the lowest possible common denominator, and therefore you may find your potential audience not the ideal market for the product or message you are trying to promote (still a great place to chat to your friends though).

It is probably better to focus your attention on a professional network such as LinkedIn and also a network such as Virb, which allows you to put your pictures, videos and blogs all in one place, with syndication of your blog with just a couple of clicks in your easy to use control panel.

Above all else, maintain meaningful, context-rich text and a professional profile.
