Modern Speakers and Creative Sound Systems From All Over the World

Modal Speakers
Created by Japanese designer Kunihiro Tsuji, a single Modal speaker is able to deliver ambient sound due to the vertical sound emission.
The sound is incredible! Rich and loud and strong, this little speaker surprises everyone with how big it sounds. It’s portable and rechargeable via USB, so you can take it anywhere you might need a big boost of sound.
Just pop open the capsule and extend the speaker – this opens the resonance chamber, increasing the bass response even higher. Plus, at a full-charge, it can run for nearly 8 hours! It’s electric awesome in the palm of your hand.
Boom Box Speakers
“Fold it yourself” mini Boom Box stereo for your iPod or other MP3 player. Complete with real, fully working and amplified speakers.
Give your speakers some extra personality by making them out of a vinyl doll. Kid Robot makes the easily hackable 7″ Munny doll and I’ve been meaning to cut one up. The combined need for some new speakers created a happy union of doll and speaker.
Sometimes bigger IS really better, especially when it comes to sound. That’s why we took a puny pair of earbuds, put them in Fred’s highly technical Way Big machine, and created 500XL – it’s 500 times the size of the original! How great will these look on your desktop alongside your mp3 player or PC? 500XL includes a built-in amp and 3-way power – it runs on batteries; you can connect it to your PC’s USB port with the supplied cord; or plug it into the wall with a generic power supply (not included). The stand-up, peggable clamshell packaging really makes a statement.
Speak-er are high-qualtiy multimedia speakers that plug directly into your computer or MP3 player.
Wireless Freewheeler Speaker
Designed by Ron Arad and Frances Pellisari for Austria’s Viteo, the Freewheeler produces high quality stereo sound indoors or out. The speaker measures in at about 22.8″ tall x 9.8″ wide, making it just about the same diameter as the tires on a Mazda MX-5 Miata (and about 2x as thick).
Just roll the Freewheeler around your house, and it’ll play your tunes remotely. Simply plug your audio source into the included transmitter, and a built-in FM receiver and rechargeable battery pack lets you wheel the mobile sound system up to 656 feet (200m) away from the base station.
Sonicum Speaker System
Sonicum is a 3-piece speaker subwoofer set. It can be connected to the line-in port of any audio source, such as a CD player, a computer, or a synthesizer.
Rithm Speakers
Danish company Davone’s Rithm speaker combines top-quality sound with a parabolic work of art.
The speaker offers an 8-inch coaxial driver with a 1-inch dome tweeter placed in the center of the woofer. Davone claims that the many layers of glue and wood that build up the frame provide extra damping and reduce unwanted vibrations for superior sound quality.
This design comes as a response to an investigation into designing products using EPS (Expanded Polystyrene). The design adds value to a material that is often regarded as cheap, unloved and disposable.
Speaker Buddies are designed to work in pairs. They can be placed in any environment and as they are lightweight they can be moved with little effort. Manufacturing in EPS allows for a wide variety of colour options.
The design of the product is makes the piece appear almost humanised, the child-like posture carries with it emotions of childhood memories, as well as reflecting the youthful thinking and ideas of the designer.
Not the Apple you’ve been hearing about so much lately . These are apple shaped digital USB Laptop speakers.? They are portable, come in red or green, and are oh so cute.

Turntable Speaker Mixer
Mix it up! Tiny turntable-style speaker allows you to not only amplify your music, but let’s you scratch (ie – add fun preprogrammed sound effects to your jams) as well.
These tipsy egg-shaped speakers let you wobble them like a Weeble while you listen to your tunes.
Unlike real eggs (and those colorful Weebles), these only come in black and red, and they don’t crack open to produce omelets. They do, however, twist open to produce enhanced bass output. I wonder if they can only play The Egg Song?
USB Hub Card Reader Speakers
Evergreen Japan presents the DN-USP301, a unique USB speaker, card reader & USB hub all in one. When separated from the middle, this large egg becomes 2 stereo speakers. The speakers can be easily placed on table top without fear of them falling down. Power is drawn from the USB port and so no need to worry about AC adaptor or batteries. The speakers is compatible with OS Windows 2000/XP. Download files from Compact Flash, Memory Stick, SD cards through the on-board card reader. Convenient 2 2.0 USB connections. A stylish solution to all your USB and audio needs.
Dutch Dead Bbudd Speaker System
It’s been a while since I’ve seen speakers that looked quite this strange. Designed to be your “little dead desktop buddy”, they look like something that your neighborhood dominatrix might have sitting next to her computer.
The oddly-named Dutch Dead Bbudd speaker system looks like some sort of naugahyde-wrapped dude with his eyes X’d out. The speakers are embedded into his feet, pumping out the tunes as he sits on your desk.
A true, object-based surround experience. The speaker cones are internally attached to a spider-like structure which is invisible from the outside.
Ceramic Paper Speakers
Mark this one in the “great materials use; not so great implementation” column: thin paper ceramic loudspeakers made from discarded musical scores and clay. The ceramic columns amplify sound from your strategically placed earbuds to broadcast music like regular speakers would; it’s like your earbuds yelling through an orange street cone.
Though we doubt the sound quality would be top notch, ceramic does reverberate sound very well, and we like the idea that the recycled musical scores are no longer reliant on someone else to play the music; they can do it themselves, and are given a 2nd chance to fulfill their destiny – the propagation of music.
Yorozu Audio Sound Revolution Kit
The Yorozu Audio kit lets you use just about anything as a speaker! Starting with the included paper milk carton “speaker”, all you do is place the vibrating extension onto a surface with the included adhesive sheets, plug in your audio source, and have an instant audio speaker. Perfect for having portable audio when you need it.
Pea Speaker Concept
The Pea Speaker system is bound to be costly, incurring damages from being tossed around, but that’s what designer Lu Le wants – a playful way to share music. Each pod holds 7 wireless bluetooth speakers. Only one possesses the one ring to rule them all because it controls global volume. Each sphere is powered by a lithium ion rechargeable via induction when placed in the pod. The system doesn’t do surround sound since it can’t separate channels, but it’s a good way to fill a large area with a mixed stereo track. Snazzy!
Reppo II Boombox Backpack
Designed by Joonas Saaranen, Reppo II is a hardshell boombox backpack with integrated speakers and high quality digital amplifier.
Just plug in any audio source, strap the whole thing on your back and share your favorite tunes with your friends on the go.
JVC Sound Garden Concept
On display in Tokyo at the Designer’s Week exhibition, the Sound Garden “Kirikabu” speaker combines your choice of potted plants with multi-directional speakers consisting of a woofer, and left- and right-channel stereo speakers powered by an internal amplifier.
BeoLab 4 Speakers
Bang & Olufsen’s most compact speaker model. Perfect for PC speaker applications, as well as smaller rooms in need of a less dominating speaker size. The classic pyramid design gives you a modern and discreet music source.
iH85B iPod Speaker
Pedal to the metal with this water-resistant iPod speaker case that clamps to your bike frame. Handlebar mounted remote control allows for safe cycling while listening to your tunes. This speaker case is perfect for the beach, poolside, and picnics, too.
Sony Rolly Sound Entertainment Player
Spawned from the Sony portable audio technology and artificial intelligence, along with the company’s design and entertainment legacy, this palm-sized, egg-shaped device provides a unique combination of music, motion and fun. “The Sony Rolly is the latest example of Sony’s expertise in entertainment and technology,” said Steve Haber, senior vice president of the Digital Imaging and Audio Division at Sony Electronics. “This isn’t just another gadget; the Rolly is a sophisticated piece of entertainment technology.”
Waterproof iPod Speakers
Taiwanese design company Nova has come up with a waterproof speaker system for iPod that looks like a tube of shower gel. Designed to be either freestanding or hung up from that hook in the shower cubicle that up until now didn’t have a purpose, it “suggests a playful life attitude,” according to the blurb on the company website.
