Rithm Speakers

Danish company Davone’s Rithm speaker combines top-quality sound with a parabolic work of art.

The speaker offers an 8-inch coaxial driver with a 1-inch dome tweeter placed in the center of the woofer. Davone claims that the many layers of glue and wood that build up the frame provide extra damping and reduce unwanted vibrations for superior sound quality.

This design comes as a response to an investigation into designing products using EPS (Expanded Polystyrene). The design adds value to a material that is often regarded as cheap,unloved and disposable.

Speaker Buddies are designed to work in pairs. They can be placed in any environment and as they are lightweight they can be moved with little effort. Manufacturing in EPS allows for a wide variety of colour options.

The design of the product is makes the piece appear almost humanised, the child-like posture carries with it emotions of childhood memories, as well as reflecting the youthful thinking and ideas of the designer.

Dutch Dead Bbudd Speaker System

It’s been a while since I’ve seen speakers that looked quite this strange. Designed to be your “little dead desktop buddy”, they look like something that your neighborhood dominatrix might have sitting next to her computer.

The oddly-named Dutch Dead Bbudd speaker system looks like some sort of naugahyde-wrapped dude with his eyes X’d out. The speakers are embedded into his feet, pumping out the tunes as he sits on your desk.

Ceramic Paper Speakers

Mark this one in the “great materials use; not so great implementation” column: thin paper ceramic loudspeakers made from discarded musical scores and clay. The ceramic columns amplify sound from your strategically placed earbuds to broadcast music like regular speakers would; it’s like your earbuds yelling through an orange street cone.

Though we doubt the sound quality would be top notch, ceramic does reverberate sound very well, and we like the idea that the recycled musical scores are no longer reliant on someone else to play the music; they can do it themselves, and are given a 2nd chance to fulfill their destiny – the propagation of music.

The Pea Speaker system is bound to be costly, incurring damages from being tossed around, but that’s what designer Lu Le wants – a playful way to share music. Each pod holds 7 wireless bluetooth speakers. Only one possesses the one ring to rule them all because it controls global volume. Each sphere is powered by a lithium ion rechargeable via induction when placed in the pod. The system doesn’t do surround sound since it can’t separate channels, but it’s a good way to fill a large area with a mixed stereo track. Snazzy!

Waterproof iPod Speakers

Taiwanese design company Nova has come up with a waterproof speaker system for iPod that looks like a tube of shower gel. Designed to be either freestanding or hung up from that hook in the shower cubicle that up until now didn’t have a purpose, it “suggests a playful life attitude,” according to the blurb on the company website.
